When we are stressed our bodies produce more of the stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline which in turn increase the flow of oxygen and blood to our muscles in preparation for the fight of our lives or a speedy escape. When the danger has subsided our bodies return to their flourishing state. One of the difficulties of the way we live now is that we are bombarded with masses of information, demands and constant interruptions which lead to spikes in stress hormones triggering, although small, continuous stress responses. This means that we are spending far more time than is ideal, in the stressed state which can have consequences for our health and have a negative impact on our work and relationships.
